It is Michael who defeated the fallen angel, Lucifer, and cast him out of Heaven, along with the other two-thirds of the angels that rebelled. Lucifer now became called Satan ("adversary") and those angels who supported him became devils. As a reward for his loyalty, Michael was made the chief angel and the leader of all angels and of the army of god, most powerful angel. This is what the title "Archangel" means, that he is above all the others in rank.
